Volunteer of the Month – September 2015
Firm: Hameline and Eccleston, LLP
George Shires is an associate with Hameline and Eccleston, LLP, an oil and gas and natural resources law firm. He first began accepting pro bono cases from DVAP in the fall of 2013, with his first case being a landlord-tenant dispute. Since then, he has accepted cases involving divorces, estate planning, consumer law, real property law, and a criminal expunction and non-disclosure order. One of the things he likes about DVAP is the variety of case types to choose from, so there are cases to interest every attorney. He remembers the first case he took, and how overjoyed his client was when he helped her get her property back. As George stated, “You can’t put a price on the feeling of knowing you’ve used your skills to help someone who otherwise would have suffered an injustice. I am the son of a minister, and service to others is a core belief my parents instilled in me at an early age. Working with DVAP has given me an opportunity not only to learn and refine legal skills, but also to give back to the community and help others who had no other legal help available to them, which is very satisfying personally. DVAP’s mentoring attorneys are available whenever you need them, which has been a great confidence booster for me when working through a case. Also, the experience I’ve gained working pro bono cases with DVAP has made me a better associate at my firm. I would also like to thank the partners at the firm, Wes Hameline and Zach Eccleston, for providing a workplace that is supportive of and encourages its associates to give back to the community through pro bono work.” Thank you for all you do, George!
