- What types of cases have you accepted?
I only take cases within the areas that I practice – estate planning and probate. Although I did just complete DVAP’s CLE on “Handling your First No-Kids Divorce,” so I expect I’ll look in to branching out soon…
-
- Describe your most compelling pro bono case.
I think a lot of the probate cases would qualify. It’s not that any one in particular stands out, but just being able to help people who are in the middle of their grief over losing a loved one, who don’t know what to do and don’t really have the resources to get the help they need- when you can take a little time out of your day to meet such a huge need for them, it’s very emotional for them, and they are always brimming over with appreciation.
-
- Why do you do pro bono?
I’ve been volunteering since I was a pre-teen. Giving back to the community was a core value in our family, and this seemed like the natural progression of that once I started practicing law.
-
- What impact has pro bono service had on your career?
It’s given me significantly more experience in my practice area, which results in more confidence in what I’m doing, and a broader depth of knowledge to draw from in my other cases.
-
- What is the most unexpected benefit you have received from doing pro bono?
I honestly really enjoy it. I thought I would see it as just another thing to check off the list, but it brings me personal fulfillment to give back in this way.
